President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan appeared at the Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, Virginia, on Jan. 19, 2010, to speak with 30 sixth grade 11-year-olds.
The President and Secretary also had two teleprompters and a podium with a Presidential seal set up for a media event at the school:
My first thought that came to mind when I stumbled on this picture this week: These are the people who are pushing “school climate” and they take over a classroom with two teleprompters and a Presidential podium? What type of “climate” message does this send to kids and teachers at this school?
Certainly other presidents have held events in schools with media tagging along. And my comments are not a politically-driven attack upon this President. But I do find it ironic the current Education Department wants to skew federal policy and funding toward “climate” when two of our nation’s top leaders can’t go into an elementary school and simply speak to kids, parents, and the media like human beings without disrupting the school climate with a theatrical performance.
It’s bad enough they had to interrupt an elementary school operation to primarily exploit the kids as a political photo-op back-drop to promote their “Race to the Top” program. Couldn’t those who believe school safety must be redefined as “school climate” at least be more sensitive to the “school climate” by acting like down-to-Earth human beings versus DC political performers while in one of our nation’s public schools?
Maybe they need a federal grant to study, ugh… school climate?
