For purposes
of this listing, the 2000-2001 school year is considered to be from
August 1, 2000, through July 31, 2001. In addition to 31 school-related
violent deaths, this page provides a sample of 44 school shootings that
did not result in death, a sample of 49 bomb and bomb threat-related
incidents, and a sample of 113 other incidents of
school-related crime, violence, and crisis situations.
For purposes of
this monitoring report, school-related violent deaths are homicides, suicides, or other violent, non-accidental deaths in the United
States in which a fatal injury occurs:
1)
inside a school, on school property, on or immediately around (and
associated with) a school bus, or in the immediate area (and associated
with) a K-12 elementary or secondary public, private, or parochial school;
2)
on the way to or from a school for a school session;
3)
while attending, or on the way to or from, a school-sponsored event;
4)
as a clear result of school-related incidents/conflicts, functions,
activities, regardless of whether on or off actual school property;

September 5, 2000: Bidwell, OH
A 66-year-old man shot his wife, a 52-year-old school cook, to death in an
elementary school parking lot about an hour before students arrived and
then went home and killed himself, according to police.
September
7, 2000: Lowell, IN
A 16 year veteran officer of a county police force died of a
self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head outside an elementary school

13, 2000: Rock Island, IL
A 19-year-old male was gunned down in an elementary school parking lot
after school hours while the building was closed.
October
19, 2000: New York, NY
Two 16-year-old high school male students were arrested in the stabbing
death of a 12-year-old intermediate school student who had been in the
high school cafeteria with a 15-year-old male high school student.
The 15-year-old male, who was later arrested when a police officer saw him
carrying a .44 Magnum, and the victim had been fighting in the cafeteria
with the two 16-year-olds. The 12-year-old was later stabbed in the
chest about a block away from the school. The incident was suspected
to be gang-related.
October 23,
2000: Los Angeles, CA
A 20-year-old security guard was killed in the parking lot of a newly
opened school for first-time, teenage offenders, while guarding the lot
around 1:05a.m.
October 24,
2000: New York, NY
An 18-year-old teen was shot and killed by two robbers as he was assisting
a special education teacher in changing a tire on her car outside of a
Brooklyn High School. The victim died from a bullet wound to the
neck. He went to the school to assist the teacher from a gas station
where he was training to be a tow-truck dispatcher, according to reports.
October 27,
2000: Memphis, TN
An 18-year-old male high school graduate was shot and killed outside of a
high school following a homecoming pep rally.
November 29, 2000: San Jose, CA
A 16-year-old male high school student was stabbed to death in front of
his brother, his high school principal and a number of classmates at a
light rail station about a block away from his high school minutes after
school dismissal. Police were seeking four suspects who were
believed to be students at the high school.
December
1, 2000: Los Angeles, CA
A 17-year-old high school senior pulled his car onto the campus parking
lot, set up a video camera and shot himself to death in front of
classmates. Police said that the male was having trouble with a
girl.
December 7, 2000: San Pablo, CA
A 16-year-old student was killed after being shot in the neck by someone
in a passing car across the street from his high school as he was walking
back from visiting his grandmother around 12:45pm. He stumbled into
the campus in front of administrative offices and was rushed to the
hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
December 8, 2000: Shiloh, MD
A 14-year-old high school student died after being found in a high school
restroom with what police reported as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot
wound to the head.
December 19, 2000: Miami, FL
A 32-year-old armored car driver died after being shot in the head by two
teenagers who robbed him of $300 after he made a pick-up at an elementary
school and walked back to his van. The robbery occurred after school
had let out for the day, although reports indicate that some students were
on the grounds at the time of the incident at 3:45pm.
January
10, 2001: Oxnard, CA
A 17-year-old non-student gunman was shot and killed by police after
taking a 17-year-old female student hostage in an open quadrangle area of
the high school after having shot several times at a car in the parking
lot during lunch time.
January 17,
2001: Baltimore, MD
A 17-year-old male high school student was shot to death while standing
near a flagpole in front of the school's main entrance. Two young
men who were not students at that school were taken into custody when
there car was stopped moments later away from the school.
January 29, 2001: Arlington, TX
A 13-year-old seventh-grader shot himself to death in a second-floor
restroom at his junior high school.
February
3, 2001: Charleston, SC
A 19-year-old male was arrested for the shooting murder of another
19-year-old man in a parking lot across from the gym at a high school
following a high school step-dance competition.
February 16, 2001: St. Louis County,
MO
A 16-year-old female special education student stopped breathing and died
after reportedly throwing a temper tantrum, throwing items, and trying to gag herself
with one of her socks. Teachers restrained the student and called
police, but the student, who suffered from a genetic disorder known as
"Fragile X Syndrome," stopped breathing and died. (This
incident is included as a school-related violent death because it followed
the student's alleged tantrum, throwing of items, and related reported aggressive
behavior.)
March 2, 2001: San Diego, CA
An 18-year-old high school graduate shot himself in the head on the high
school campus following an after-school meeting with a school
counselor. The male was reportedly upset after breaking up with his
girlfriend. Another adult and two students were nearby and at least
another 20 students were reportedly on campus at the time of the incident.
Crisis counselors were dispatched to the school following the incident and
for the next school day.
March 5, 2001: Santee, CA
A 15-year-old male student was charged for killing two classmates, ages 14
and 15, and wounding 13 other people (11 students, a student teacher, and
a school security official).
March 25, 2001: Miami, FL
A 39-year-old nun was stabbed and beaten to death at an Eastern Orthodox
Church school. An 18-year-old monk student was arrested and
reportedly confessed to the murder.
March 30, 2001: Gary, IN
A 16-year-old 10th grade male student was shot in the head and killed in a
high school parking lot by a 17-year-old former student.
April 3, 2001: Klein, TX
A 13-year-old eighth-grade female student reportedly shot herself to death
inside a school restroom during the middle school's second period of
classes.
April 23, 2001: San Jose, CA
A 36-year-old school bus driver was arrested at a contracted company's bus
yard after allegedly killing another driver and wounding three women with
a semiautomatic handgun as drivers were getting their buses ready for the
start of the school workday. Bus services for a number of children
were reportedly delayed by several hours.
April 26, 2001: Cleveland, OH
A 33-year-old evening custodian was shot to death in a high school parking
lot as he was leaving work at 11:00pm.
May 14, 2001: Croom, MD
A 17-year-old male special education student went into cardiac arrest and
died after a scuffle with a staff member, according to police.

15, 2001: Ennis, TX
A 16-year-old male sophomore shot himself to death in front of an English
teacher and a female student.
May 24,
2001: Brooklyn, NY
A 9-year-old female elementary student died of an asthma attack following
a fight with another 9-year-old female in a school restroom.
June 5, 2001: East Haven, CT
A 15-year-old male high school freshman ran out of class and hanged
himself in a tree after allegedly learning that he was going to be
suspended for using tobacco in violation of school rules. The
student reportedly had also recently broken up with his girlfriend.

20, 2001: Paterson, NJ
Eleven males ages 15 to 17 were arrested and charged with murder and
robbery after a 42-year-old homeless man was attacked and beaten to death
shortly after police broke up a fight between black and Hispanic at a
nearby high school.

A sample of 43 school-related shootings occurring nationwide
in the 2000-2001 school year not resulting in death is listed below.
It should be noted that this is only a sample and and
is not intended to include
all of the many incidents involving firearms confiscated but not used, and other weapons possession
or use that occur in U.S. schools.
List includes individuals shot but not killed and firearms discharged in
schools, on school campuses and buses, at school-sponsored events, to
and from school involving students, and as a clear result of
school-related incidents/conflicts.
August 11, 2000: Durham, NC
A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with shots fired outside an
elementary school after regular school hours.

16, 2000: Shallotte, NC
A 17-year-old male and a 19 year old male were arrested after shots from
an assault rifle forced teachers and students at two day care centers and
a high school in a lockdown. Although the six shots from the AK-47
were not intended for the schools, it was unclear as to what caused the
shooting.
August 23, 2000:
DeKalb, GA
A high school student was shot near a busy county school bus transfer lot.
August
24, 2000: Claxton, GA
An 11th grade male student showed up for classes at his high school with a
gunshot wound to the arm. The male reportedly told police that he
was shot by an intruder at his uncle's house, where he had stopped on the
way to school.
September 11,
2000: Boston, MA
An 18-year-old was shot through the shoulder at a transit station
reportedly stemming from a fight between rivals at a high school the
previous week.
September 13,
2000: Mobile, AL
A 17-year-old high school junior was arrested for allegedly firing a gun
on campus minutes before classes started. No one was injured.
September
18, 2000: Mount Healthy, OH
A 14 year-old eighth grade student was arrested for firing a shot into the
ceiling of a junior high classroom. The student was persuaded by the
school resource officer to surrender the gun.
September
25, 2000: Seattle, WA
A 17-year-old male was wounded in the ankle in a drive-by shooting outside
a suburban high school at dismissal.
September
26, 2000: New Orleans, LA
Two boys, ages 13 and 14, shot each other with the same gun during a fight
in a breezeway between the main building and cafeteria at their middle
school.
September 29, 2000:
Buffalo, NY
Two bullets were fired through windows in a first-floor pre-kindergarten
classroom and a basement kindergarten classroom at 11:45a.m. The
bullets struck the ceiling in the two rooms. No one was injured.
October
5, 2000: Ontario, CA
A 35-year-old man who had fired six rounds into a former relative's home
was arrested following a standoff with police near two elementary
schools. The male had fired one round at police, who secured the
area until the man surrendered. No students were injured.
October
5, 2000: Minneapolis, MN
A 17-year-old and a 22-year-old were shot while standing outside of high
school. The males were refused admission to the school's homecoming
dance because they had not been invited by the school's students.

6, 2000: Chapel Hill, NC
A gun was fired into a crowd of spectators at a high school football
game. No one was seriously injured.
October
9, 2000: Salt Lake City, UT
A 15-year-old male student was shot when teens allegedly affiliated with a
gang exited a vehicle and demanded his shoes as he walked home from
school.
November 1, 2000:
Memphis, TN
A 40-year-old female elementary school teacher was shot in her right hip
after a man opened fire outside an elementary school at dismissal
time.

2000: Phoenix, AZ
A 17-year-old female charter school student in a wheelchair was struck by
two bullets being fired at a group of men at the west end of a nearby
apartment complex.

2000: Los Angeles, CA
A 17-year-old male student was shot in his right shoulder while walking
across a high school's front parking lot following the school's homecoming
football game.
November 17,
2000: Los Angeles, CA
A 17-year-old male was arrested for firing a .25-caliber automatic pistol
at police while fleeing from a crowd involved in a disturbance outside of
a middle school at 5:30pm.
December 1, 2000: San Diego, CA
A 15-year-old male student shot himself in the groin on a high school
volleyball court before the start of gym class in what appeared to be an
accidental shooting, according to school police. Reports indicated
that the male had showed off the gun to at least one classmate earlier
that day and told her that he was going to shoot another student, but the
incident was never reported to authorities.
January 3, 2001: San Francisco, CA
A 15-year-old high school student was accidentally shot in the hip as a
16-year-old male classmate showed off a gun in class.

17, 2001: Vigo County, IN
An Indiana school superintendent was injured by a bullet and flying glass
when a gunman, believed to possibly be an angry school employee, fired
through the back door of superintendent's home.

18, 2001: St. Louis, MO
A 19-year-old was shot in the stomach and wounded in a high school
parking lot as he was leaving a basketball game between two rival high
schools. Moments later, a car returned and fired five or six shots
at students standing outside the school, and then a second car drove by
and sprayed the lot with gunfire again. No additional students were
injured.
February 2, 2001: Detroit, MI
A gunshot fired from across the street shattered a window and glass
slightly injured two students and a teacher at a Detroit high
school. Injuries were reported as being superficial.

7, 2001: Dallas, TX
A 14-year-old eighth-grade female student's left hand was grazed by a
bullet after a 14-year-old male student held a gun to her chest, asked her
if she was ready to die, and fired the gun in a Dallas middle school.

8, 2001: Los Angeles, CA
A 17-year-old male student was shot in his forearm and hip, and another
17-year-old male received head injuries after being repeatedly hit with an
object, in an alleged gang fight outside of a high school.

14, 2001: New Haven, CT
A 16-year-old female student was shot in the leg as she was leaving her
high school. Five shots had been fired in connection with an
argument involving other males and the female was reportedly not the
intended target.
March 6, 2001: Prince George's
County, MD
A 17-year-old male non-student was wounded outside of Largo Senior High
School by a gunshot following a fight in the cafeteria that occurred
during an after-school program.
March 7, 2001: Poplar Bluff, MO
A 14-year-old male student was accused of shooting a BB gun at a passing
school bus, shattering the bus window that was made of safety glass.
None of the students on the bus were injured.
March 7, 2001: Williamsport, PA
A 14-year-old female eighth-grade student fired a handgun in a crowded
Catholic school cafeteria, wounding a 13-year-old female student.
March 9, 2001: Bellevue, WA
Police locked down a high school after shots were heard and three males
were reportedly observed on a soccer field, one carrying a rifle,
according to police. The incident occurred while students and
parents were attending a drama rehearsal around 7pm in the evening at the
high school. No arrests were reported.
March 12, 2001: Bell, CA
A 16-year-old male was shot in the head in what police were treating as a
gang-related attack outside of his home near an elementary school at
2:30pm. The teen victim was found outside of the elementary school
by police after they received the 911 call.
March 12, 2001: Louisville, KY
Elementary school students were locked down and hid under their desks for
30 to 45 minutes after a gunman fired shots at another person on a street
behind the school. The gunman did not attempt to enter the
school. All doors were locked prior to the shooting except for the
main entrance.
March 22, 2001: El Cajon, CA
An 18-year-old high school senior who police say was armed with a 12-guage
shotgun and a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun was arrested for firing
shots that hit at least three students and two teachers with shotgun
pellets. A school resource officer returned fire, shooting the
suspect in the jaw and buttocks.
March 22, 2001: Benavides, TX
A 17-year-old male high school student was arrested for allegedly shooting
out the front and back windows of his chemistry teacher's pickup truck
after learning that he was receiving a low grade. The male, a member
of the high school's baseball team, was reportedly upset because he needed
a passing grade to continue playing baseball.
March 27, 2001: Los Angeles, CA
A gunman fired two shots outside of a high school at approximately 2:15pm.
No one was injured, according to police.
April 3, 2001: Columbus, OH
A 16-year-old high school student was arrested after a gun he was
allegedly carrying in his back pants discharged in a school
restroom. No one was hurt.

4, 2001: Philadelphia, PA
A 6-year-old female elementary student was shot in the leg by a gun fired
from a block or more away from school while she played on the school
playground during recess.
April 18, 2001: Miami, FL
Two 11th-grade high school students pulled out guns and opened fired
outside of their high school after a vehicle pulled up in an alley behind
the high school and someone inside the car opened fire on them.
April 20, 2001: Monroe, LA
A 14-year-old male alternative school student pulled out a semi-automatic
gun, pointed it at the principal, and pulled the trigger as students and
school officials were waiting outside of the gym to check arriving
students with a hand-held metal detector. The gun either misfired or
did not have a round in the chamber, according to police. Students
fled and the principal held the gym door shut as the male fired at least
three rounds into the door. The suspect got into the gym through an
open door and fired another shot.
May 7, 2001: New Orleans, LA
A 77-year-old woman was shot in the heel, a classroom window was struck
with a stray bullet, and a class of first-graders was forced to take cover
as gunshots were exchanged between a group of individuals on foot and a
group in a car outside of an elementary school.
June 7, 2001: Richmond,
VA
A 14-year-old male non-student suspected of driving a stolen car was shot
by a police officer in the parking lot of a high school.
June
7, 2001: Boston, MA
An 18-year-old male who was reportedly angry about being dumped by his
girlfriend and his father's failing health allegedly fired on a school bus
full of children with a high-powered pellet rifle. The male was
reportedly a suspect in at least 12 other sniper attacks on motorists.
July 16, 2001: Racine, WI
A private security guard allegedly fired shots into an elementary school
door around 6:15pm after responding to a burglary alarm and reportedly
seeing a 13-year-old male running into the school. The officer
stated that the gun accidentally discharged. Four children were
inside the school according to playground leaders who were part of an
after-school recreation program.
July 30, 2001: Los Angeles, CA
A school police officer was shot in the chest by a teen gunman in a high
school parking lot. The officer escaped serious injury because he
was wearing a bulletproof vest. The school, a year-round school,
went into lockdown. The suspects fled after the confrontation.

Threats, and Explosive Incidents
The
following is a sample of 49 reported school-related bomb, bomb threats, and
explosive incidents. This is only a sample and is not
intended to represent a complete listing of incidents that occur in U.S.
schools.
August 31,
2000: Edgerton, WI
Two 13-year-old males were charged with possession of an explosive device
powerful enough to blow up a small building, according to police.
The males reportedly built the bomb following instructions from the
Internet and were talking about it at their middle school.
September
5, 2000: Temple Hills, MD
Police and arson investigators questioned a 13-year-old male suspected of
being the source of at least 20 pipe bombs found inside his mother's
apartment. The school where the boy is a seventh grader was also
searched, but nothing additional was found.
September
8, 2000: Berwick, ME
A 14-year-old male was arrested after school officials found a bag in the
school cafeteria containing a half-dozen three or four-inch cylindrical
objects wrapped in tape and attached to fuses. The boy reportedly
told police that he learned how to build the devices from the Internet.
September
17, 2000: Denver, CO
The Denver Post documented cases statewide where schools stored aging
science lab chemicals, a number of which were capable of creating large
explosions. The report indicated that police bomb squads removed chemicals
from 48 of 52 schools checked --- a 92 percent discovery rate of hazardous
materials in Colorado schools.
October
6, 2000: Charleston, SC
A 16-year-old male high school student was charged for injuring two girls
by throwing a metal-laced cherry bomb into a crowded area of students
waiting to leave school.
October
11, 2000: Orange County, CA
A 17-year-old Santa Ana High School sophomore reportedly faced expulsion
and criminal charges after campus security officers found a live pipe bomb
in his backpack.
October
15, 2000: Portland, OR
The 59-year-old father of a 17-year-old high school student was seriously
injured when a bomb went off in the driveway of his residence that was
apparently intended for the 17-year-old. The 17-year-old male
reported an intimidating letter and fliers to school police two weeks
before the blast. The 17-year-old was also reportedly the target of
a dummy bomb delivered to his girlfriend's house.
October
26, 2000: Grady, GA
Two high school male students, ages 15 and 16, were arrested after three
chemical-filled bottles exploded outside of the high school and a smoke
bomb was set off in a hallway.
October
31, 2000: San Antonio, TX
An 18-year-old high school junior was charged with planting five dummy
bombs on October 20th in the corridors of Dilley High School.
November
1, 2000: Salt Lake City, UT
A pipe bomb was set off at a high school after someone broke into the
school around 3a.m. and placed the bomb near the school mascot.
School walls and ceiling areas reportedly had projectile damage and
markings.
November 8,
2000: Denton County, TX
Northwestern ISD closed its five elementary schools, three middle schools,
three intermediate schools, and its high school as law enforcement
investigated an anonymous bomb threat reported as a part of an alleged
plot overheard the previous day.
December 1, 2000: New
Port Richey, FL
Approximately 3,200 middle and high school students were evacuated to the
school sports stadium for 45 minutes after students told school officials
that they believed that two male students brought a bomb to school.
Potential explosive material was found in the backpack of a 15-year-old
freshman. The two males were charged with misdemeanors for
disruption of education. Police reported that the two males learned
about the explosive combination when watching an educational video about
Hiroshima and bomb making in a science class.
December 8, 2000:
Granite City, IL
A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted arson and disorderly
conduct for attempting to blow up a chemistry lab in his high
school. Police report that the male, who was caught on school
security cameras entering the lab, turned on five gas jet burners for
about eight minutes and closed the lab's ventilators before another
student walked into the room and noticed the smell. Police say that
the 17-year-old left a message on a school computer about a week earlier
saying that someone was going to blow up the lab.
January 12, 2001:
Sacramento, CA
Two 13-year-old middle school students were arrested on suspicion of
intending to make an explosive device after one of the males allegedly
made a Molotov cocktail at home and took it to school to give to the other
teen to use in a gang fight. The male was apprehended by the
school's security officer who had learned that a gang fight was supposed
to occur.
January 24,
2001: Knoxville, TN
A 16-year-old male high school student was arrested after he brought a
device he claimed was a bomb to school. The device, which was a
plastic flashlight filled with nails, screws, fish hooks and a canister of
compressed carbon dioxide, had no potential to explode according to
reports.
February 2,
2001: Plain City, UT
A pipe bomb, found in a high school parking lot, was detonated off campus
by an explosives team from an area Air Force base. Police reportedly
indicated that a school custodian picked up the pipe bomb earlier in the
week and did not know what it was until a police officer assigned to the
school saw it later in the week and identified it as a bomb.
February
5, 2001: San Jose, CA
A water bottle filled with chemicals exploded a few yards from a high
school building being renovated at the end of a high school campus.
Nobody was injured according to reports.
February
6, 2001: Tazewell, TN
Two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old were arrested in connection with a
scheme to detonate a bomb at a high school according to reports from the
sheriff's office.
February
11, 2001: Palm Harbor, FL
A 14-year-old eighth-grade male student was arrested at his home on
charges of making a bomb and planning to set it off at his school,
possibly the next day, according to police.
February
14, 2001: Elmira, NY
An 18-year-old male student was arrested by the high school's school
resource officer in the school cafeteria and was charged for allegedly
bringing 18 bombs, a sawed-off shotgun, and a loaded pistol into the
school.
February 17,
2001: Livingston, NJ
Two 14-year-old males were arrested by police responding to a burglary
alarm at a middle school. One of the males threw an explosive device
on the ground upon being approached by police. Explosive-making
components and instructions were reportedly found at the home of the boy
who threw down the device.
February
17, 2001: Williamsport, OH
Three teenagers (two age 16 and one age 17) were arrested and later
admitted to breaking into their high school, ransacking the school, and
attempting to detonate a tank to blow up the school. Reports
indicate that they used a torch to cut locks off of doors, dumped nitric
acid on a floor, took money and candy, and then soaked a curtain in
flammable liquid, put it next to an acetylene tank, and set it on fire in
an attempt to detonate the tank. The tank failed to ignite.
Sheriff Department officials indicated that if the tank had exploded, it
would have had more force than 37 sticks of dynamite.
February
21, 2001: Bogota, NJ
A 17-year-old male was arrested by police on weapons and explosives
charges in connection with building a bomb in his room at home following
an argument with another student and telling classmates that he had
materials at home to make a bomb. Police reportedly found a metal
can with kerosene and a wick, nails wrapped in duct tape, black powder,
two large bottles of butane, and two pieces of pipe hidden behind a
dead-bolted bedroom and closet doors.
February
27, 2001: Tampa, FL
Three 15-year-old students, two boys and one girl, were arrested after a
small explosive device went off in a communal area of their high
school. A plastic container stuffed with an explosive mixture was
found by officials.

27, 2001: Tampa, FL
Several students at a Tampa technical high school built an inert bomb as a
class project focusing on building model weapons of the past or
future. Police described the bomb as "inert" but noted
that if it was functional, it could cause massive damage in a 300-foot
area.

28, 2001: Chino Valley, CA
An apparent pipe bomb exploded outside of classrooms and school security
authorities found a second explosive device that failed to detonate at a
Chino high school.
March
1, 2001: Bridgeton, NJ

A 17-year-old male high school student was charged for placing a fake bomb
on school grounds. A school monitor noticed the device in the
courtyard with wires sticking out of it and a note indicating that it was
a bomb. Another student told a school security official that the
male planted the device.

Administrators at a suburban Philadelphia high school near Phoenixville,
PA, banned students' cars in the school parking lots and prohibited
students from carrying water bottles and soda cans, as well as book bags
that are not clear plastic or mesh. The bans occurred following a
series of bomb threats in the three weeks prior to the bans. More
than a dozen real or hoax bombs were found in the area since March of
2000. Seven were pipe bombs, five of which exploded in or near cars
at shopping malls.

for bringing one explosive device to the school and for having four others
at home, according to police. The devices were reportedly made from
"regular household items" and were "big enough to cause
significant damage," police said.

cardboard fireworks tube with added powder and shrapnel to school in his

from a city police officer assigned to the schools who had learned that

and possession or manufacture of a bomb in connection with at least three
pop bottle bombs that injured nine Catholic elementary school students and
a teacher. The two juveniles reportedly later admitted in court to
the offenses.
April 9, 2001: Waukegan, IL
Three teens (ages 16,18, and 19) were arrested for phoning in bomb threats and detonating
explosives at a high school. Two chemical-based plastic explosive
devices exploded, one in a toilet bowl and the other in a garbage can, and
similar devices were found in the boys bathroom. Two five-pound bags
of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, the explosive used in the Oklahoma City
bombing, were also found in the home of one of the three teens.

Police raided the homes of 11 middle school students and arrested a
14-year-old male who had several guns, bomb recipes, $4,900 in cash, and
Nazi posters in his room. The 14-year-old reportedly had two
handguns in his room, along with two shotguns and three rifles legally
possessed in his closest. The raid was in connection with an
investigation of rumors of a bomb plot at their middle school.

A 17-year-old former high school student was arrested for allegedly taking
an explosive device onto the school's parking lot between school
days. Police found him in a vehicle on the lot around 12:30am at
which time he was reportedly in possession of a palm-sized cylindrical

A fake bomb in the form of a flashlight rigged with wires, batteries, and
an antenna was found in high school locker. Students were evacuated
to a school parking lot. Sheriff's officers responded and secured

school resource officer's gun and punching him in the face while he broke
up a fight, according to sheriff department officials. The deputy

were notified to investigate his alleged plan to shoot and kill five
classmates he did not like, and then kill himself, according to
reports. A school resource officer indicated that the threat was

he had asked another student to bring guns from home and meet him outside
the school.

A 13-year-old middle school student was suspected of raping a 12-year-old
female middle school student in a storage room during school hours.
The victim reportedly told police that girls held her down while a boy
sexually assaulted her. The county prosecutor also indicated that he
would open a criminal investigation into possible security lapses that may
have played a role in the alleged rape.

A 14-year-old female was allegedly stabbed three times by a 12-year-old
female outside of a middle school. The incident reportedly occurred
around 7:15am as students were about to enter an alternative middle
school. The victim required 2 and 1/2 hours of surgery for two
abdomen wounds and one wound to the back of her hand from a 5-inch steak
knife.

A 15-year-old male was stabbed in the heart after he reportedly stepped
into a fight to help his friend outside of a middle school. A
16-year-old was suspect was arrested. A 13-year-old student and another
juvenile non-student were also identified as suspects.

A 14-year-old male middle school student was stabbed in an eighth-grade
social studies class. A 13-year-old male student was charged for the
attack.

Augusta, GA
An 15-year-old male was arrested while sitting in his high school gym
balcony bleachers in possession of a .32-caliber revolver and six rounds
of ammunition. He was apprehended by the principal and a School Resource
Officer (SRO).

A 14-year-old male freshman was arrested after allegedly showing off a
fully loaded .38-caliber revolver to students in the cafeteria, and then
struggling and attempting to run from school police.

Springs, SC
School officials locked down a high school for three hours after a box of
ammunition and a death threat paper was found in a boys' restroom.
May 18, 2001: Garden
Grove, CA
A female teacher was struck in the head with a blunt object by an unknown
assailant who approached her from behind as she was alone in her classroom
during lunch. The school had reportedly received more than 30
threats of violence in the two months prior to the incident.

A seventh-grade male student was arrested and charged with aggravated
assault after pointing a loaded revolver at another student in a school
cafeteria. A student and four coaches grabbed the suspect, disarmed
him, and held him for sheriff's deputies.

Five city schools were locked down as police searched for a suspect who
fled from his home while police served an arrest warrant.

A 14-year-old student allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old high school student
in the chest in a suspected gang-related fight.

Meade, MD
A 17-year-old male student was arrested and charged for possession of a
9mm handgun with a filed serial number that he brought to school to
allegedly frighten another student.

Pima County law enforcement officials reportedly arrested 514 county
students for making comments perceived to be threats during the course of
this school year, averaging about three arrests per school day according
to a newspaper report.
May 29, 2001: Bronx, NY
A 17-year-old male high school student was slashed in the chest, head, and
back with a razor blade allegedly by another 17 year-old male student
during a fight.
May 30, 2001: Richmond,
VA
Two high school students allegedly assaulted a female security officer,
resulting in the officer being treated for bruises at a local medical
center.
June 6, 2001: Miami, FL
Police arrested two robbery suspects outside of an elementary school and
searched room-to-room inside the school for a third suspect as
approximately 80 students inside the school were secured in a classroom.
June 7, 2001: Arlington,
TX
A 26-year-old police officer was shot in the head and died by a fellow
officer in an accidental shooting during a crisis training exercise at a
junior high school. (Note: This incident is not listed in the
school-related violent death count above due to the fact that it was found
to be an accidental shooting.)
June 7, 2001: Dania
Beach, FL
A 12-year-old sixth-grader was arrested after a teacher found a loaded gun
in his backpack. The male reportedly claimed that he was trying to
protect himself from another student who was harassing him over Pokemon
cards.
June 12, 2001: Jersey
City, NJ
A kindergarten student was suspended for bringing a butcher knife to
school so she could stab a classmate who allegedly had been harassing her,
according to reports.
June 13, 2001: Boston,
MA
A 13-year-old female middle school student, who was reportedly upset over
being harassed, allegedly slashed the 13-year-old male student on his face
and chest with a razor blade.
June 15, 2001:
Bridgeport, CT
A car plowed into a group of people waiting for a school bus, resulting in
a woman and three children being injured. A nine-year-old female was
dragged a short distance and pinned under the car, but bystanders lifted
it off of her. The driver had apparently passed out while drive
according to reports.
June 22, 2001: Lucerne
Valley, CA
Two parents, ages 45 and 48, entered a school superintendent's office,
handcuffed him, announced that he was under citizens' arrest, and
kidnapped him, driving him away in their vehicle. They were charged
with kidnapping, conspiracy, and false imprisonment. The parents
were reportedly chronic complainers about district policies.
July 28, 2001:
Monticello, MN
A sheriff's deputy was assaulted and needed 16 stitches in his face after
chasing two suspects observed outside of an elementary school where a
burglar alarm had been activated. The deputy responded to the alarm
at the school and saw computer equipment on the grass outside of the
school, while a district employee who responded saw the two men hiding in
a ditch. The men fled and the deputy pursued them. One man was
apprehended following the confrontation and the assailant remained at
large at the time of the report.
